Moses Montefiore Anshe Emunah Hebrew Congregation (MMAE) is a friendly, Modern Orthodox congregation guided by our rabbi and leaders. The congregation reaches out to families and the community seeking to inspire and enrich Jewish identity. In pursuit of this mission, we seek to grow in our love of God and to apply the Torah's teachings to our lives while pursuing the highest ethical standards of kindness and communal responsibility.

History

The History of MMAE

1888

Moses Montefiore Hebrew Congregation is incorporated and located in a part of Southwest Baltimore known as Little Jerusalem. After a few short years, Emunath Israel joined Moses Montefiore and became Moses Montefiore Emunath Israel Congregation.

1897

Moses Montefiore Emunath Israel adds an addition to a shul on Smallwood Street and practices from this location for the next 65 years.

1935

Ahavas Achim Congregation merges with the Montefiore congregation.

1955

Anshe Emunah, which was incorporated in 1887 and one of the three shuls that formed the Union of Jewish Orthodox Congregations of America, merges with Liberty Jewish Center, which was organized in 1953. In 1961, Aitz Chaim Congregation, which was also incorporated in 1888, merged with Anshe Emunah Liberty Jewish Center, becoming Anshe Emunah-Aitz Chaim Liberty Jewish Center.

1962

Woodmoor Hebrew Congregation, which formed in 1957, merges with Moses Montefiore Emunath Israel and becomes known as Moses Montefiore Emunath Israel/Woodmoor Congregation. The congregation moves to Coronado Road in Randallstown, where they remain until 1998.

1974

Tifereth Israel merges with Liberty Jewish Center, making it Anshe Emunah/Aitz Chaim/Tifereth Israel (LIC).

2000

Moses Montefiore merges with Anshe Emunah/Aitz Chaim/Tifereth Israel, officially becoming Moses Montefiore Anshe Emunah Hebrew Congregation and residing at our present location on Rockland Hills Drive in Greengate.
